Diagrammatic scale to assess downy mildew severity in melon Horticultura Brasileira
Michereff,Sami J; Noronha,Marissônia A; Lima,Gaus SA; Albert,Ígor CL; Melo,Edilaine A; Gusmão,Luciana O.
The downy mildew, caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, is an important melon disease in Northeast Brazil. Considering the lack of standard methods for its assessment, a diagrammatic scale was developed with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 82, and 96% of affected leaf area. The scale was then checked for its accuracy, precision, and reproducibility in estimating downy mildew severity. The diagrammatic scale was validated by eight disease raters; using 50 leaves with different severity levels, previously measured using the software Assess®. Two evaluations were performed on the same set of leaves, but in a different sequence order, by the same raters, within a 15-day interval. The accuracy and precision of each rater was determined by simple linear regression between...

Effect of root and leaf applications of soluble silicon on blast development in rice Bragantia
Cacique,Isaias Severino; Domiciano,Gisele Pereira; Moreira,Wiler Ribas; Rodrigues,Fabrício Ávila; Cruz,Maria Fernanda Antunes; Serra,Núria Sierras; Català,Ana Botta.
Blast, caused by Pyricularia oryzae, is the most important fungal disease of rice worldwide. This study aimed to compare root and foliar supply of soluble silicon (Si) on rice resistance to blast. The application of soluble Si to the roots increased Si concentration in leaf tissues as compare to plants grown in soil amended with calcium silicate. There was no increase in leaf Si concentration after soluble Si spray, regardless if the leaves were washed or not before analysis. X-ray microanalysis revealed that Si deposition was very similar on the leaf epidermis of plants sprayed with soluble Si, root amended with soluble Si or grown in soil amended with calcium silicate. The lesion size, the number of lesions per cm² of leaf and the area under blast...

Magnesium-induced alterations in the photosynthetic performance and resistance of rice plants infected with Bipolaris oryzae Scientia Agricola
Moreira,Wiler Ribas; Bispo,Wilka Messner da Silva; Rios,Jonas Alberto; Debona,Daniel; Nascimento,Clístenes Williams Araújo; Rodrigues,Fabrício Ávila.
Brown spot (BS), caused by the fungus Bipolaris oryzae, is one of the most important diseases contracted by rice. We investigated the effect of magnesium (Mg) on the development of BS, caused by Bipolaris oryzae, and the effects of disease development on the photosynthetic performance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants (cv. Metica-1) grown in nutrient solutions containing 0.25 or 4.0 mM of Mg. Assessments of BS severity, leaf Mg and pigment concentrations (total chlorophylls and carotenoids), were carried out at 120 h after inoculation, in addition to gas exchange parameters,. Higher leaf concentration of Mg was observed in plants supplied with 4.0 mM Mg than in those supplied with 0.25 mM. The increase in leaf Mg was accompanied by a decrease in BS...

Nutritional status of rice plants supplied with silicon in response to Pyricularia oryzae infection Bragantia
Domiciano,Gisele Pereira; Araujo,Leonardo; Duarte,Henrique Silva Silveira; Freitas,Cecilia Chagas; Einhardt,Andersom Milech; Rodrigues,Fabrício Ávila.
ABSTRACT Considering the importance of silicon (Si) to increase rice resistance to blast, this study investigated the nutritional status of rice plants supplied with this element in response to Pyricularia oryzae infection. Plants were grown in nutrient solutions containing 0 and 2 mmol·L-1 of Si (referred to -Si and +Si plants, respectively). The area under blast progress curve decreased for +Si plants due to a significant increase of 714% on the foliar Si concentration in contrast to -Si plants. For +Si plants, the foliar N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, and B concentrations were significantly lower in comparison to -Si plants. On infected plants, the foliar N, K, and Cu concentrations were significantly lower in comparison to noninfected ones. The foliar Zn, Fe,...
